Where are the Timlaline dunes?

The Timlaline dunes (also spelled Timlalin, Timaline, or Timlalin dünen in German) are a stretch of golden Sahara sand located along Morocco's Atlantic coast, roughly 40 km north of Agadir, between the villages of Tamri and Imsouane. They are the closest desert dunes you can reach from Agadir city.

What makes the Timlaline dunes unique is their position — pure Sahara-style sand dunes rising directly next to the ocean. You can ride a quad in the desert in the morning and surf in Imsouane the same afternoon.

What to do at the Timlaline dunes

The Timlaline dunes are home to Morocco's top desert activities, all operated by certified local Berber teams:

  • Quad biking — 1-hour or 2-hour guided rides on automatic quads
  • Sandboarding — glide down golden slopes on a sand board
  • Camel rides — traditional Berber camels across the dunes
  • Buggy tours — side-by-side two-seater desert buggies
  • Horse riding — beach + dune horseback adventures
  • Sunset sessions — Moroccan mint tea on top of the highest dune

How tall are the Timlaline dunes?

The highest dunes at Timlaline reach about 80 meters above sea level — tall enough for proper sandboarding and dramatic sunset photos, but small enough to walk up without being a desert trekker. The dune field stretches about 4 km along the coast.

Best time to visit Timlaline

Timlaline is open year-round. The best months are October to April when temperatures stay between 18°C and 28°C — perfect for full-day desert tours. Summer (June to August) is hotter, so we recommend morning or sunset sessions. Sunset is magical in any season.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the Timlaline dunes free to visit? +
Walking on the Timlaline dunes is free. Activities like quad biking, camel rides, sandboarding and buggy tours are paid, ranging from €15 for a short camel ride to €60 for a 2-hour combo tour.
How do I get to Timlaline from Agadir? +
Take the N1 coastal road north from Agadir toward Essaouira. After about 40 km (40 minutes drive) you reach Timlaline. Look for "Quad Timlaline Service" on Google Maps. We also offer private transfers from Agadir, Taghazout, Tamraght and Imsouane.
Can I visit Timlaline dunes without booking an activity? +
Yes, you can walk on the dunes and take photos for free. But for a real desert experience we recommend booking at least a camel ride or sunset session — that's when the dunes truly come alive.
Are the Timlaline dunes the same as the Sahara? +
Geologically yes — the Timlaline dunes are part of the Atlantic-edge Sahara. The big difference is location: instead of an 8-hour drive to Merzouga, you reach real Sahara dunes in 40 minutes from Agadir.
Is Timlaline good for kids? +
Absolutely. The dunes are safe to walk on, camel rides work from age 3, and children from age 6 can ride as passengers on a quad. Many families plan a half-day trip combining the dunes with a picnic.
